UbuntuNet Alliance is proud to celebrate the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN) on the launch of its biannual newsletter, ZAMREN Connect. This publication marks a significant step forward in enhancing visibility for National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Africa, an essential factor in unlocking opportunities for funding, partnerships, and recognition of the transformative work NRENs are carrying out across the continent.
The inaugural issue of ZAMREN Connect showcases the breadth of ZAMREN’s initiatives both within Zambia and across the region. Notably, it highlights ZAMREN’s collaboration with Angola in supporting the establishment of ANGOREN, the national research and education network for Angola. Such regional engagements reflect the spirit of the UbuntuNet Alliance: advancing research and education by working together beyond borders.
This edition also shines a spotlight on ZAMREN’s growing partnerships, including a Memorandum of Understanding with SMART Zambia to accelerate digital transformation, and collaborations with the Information and Communications Technology Association of Zambia (ICTAZ) to build capacity and strengthen Zambia’s ICT ecosystem. Articles on youth empowerment, women in the digital era, and partnerships with institutions such as Charles Lwanga College of Education further demonstrate ZAMREN’s holistic approach to research and education advancement.
Of particular note to our community, ZAMREN hosted the UbuntuNet Alliance NREN CEOs’ Meeting alongside the 2025 Annual General Meeting, positioning Zambia as a hub for regional collaboration. The newsletter also celebrates the election of Prof. Mundia Muya, ZAMREN’s Board Chairperson, to the UbuntuNet Alliance Board of Trustees, a strong signal of Zambia’s growing leadership in the African NREN space.
Through ZAMREN Connect, ZAMREN is setting an example of how visibility can amplify the impact of NRENs. UbuntuNet Alliance encourages all member NRENs to share their stories, showcase their milestones, and build stronger networks of collaboration. Together, we can ensure that the critical role of NRENs in powering Africa’s research and education ecosystems is recognized, celebrated, and supported at local, regional, and global levels.
