The Federated Academic Community of Mozambique (CAF Moz), the Identity Federation of the Mozambique Research and Education Network (MoRENet) has become the latest federation of UbuntuNet Alliances’ Member NRENs to be admitted as a member of eduGAIN.
CAF Moz, was accepted as the 59th Member of eduGAIN on 28 July 2019 along with eduIDM.ma, the Identity Federation of the National Research and Education Network (NREN) of Morocco.
eduGAIN is an international interfederation service interconnecting research and education identity federation. The service enables the secure exchange of information related to identity, authentication and authorisation between participating federations.
CAF Moz becomes the second federation in sub Saharan Africa, outside South Africa, to become an eduGAIN member. The Renu Identity Federation (RIF), the Identity Federation of the Research and Education Network of Uganda got admitted as the 55th member of EduGAIN on January 30 2018.
According to MoRENet CEO, Prof. Lourinho Chemane, the admission of CAF Moz is a breakthrough for Mozambique’s academic and research community as students and researchers from the NREN’s connected institutions will now have access to international interfederation services through the sharing of information with other eduGAIN members.
The work for the establishment of CAF-Moz began in 2016 and was officially recognized in 2017 as the Identity federation of MoRENet, the Network of Higher Education and Research Institutions of Mozambique, in a process that was supported by the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP).
