A second joint TANDEM, MAGIC and Sci-GaIA workshop on ‘Promotion of Open Science in Africa’ was held in Senegal, Dakar on March 15, 2016.
The workshop came as one of the pre-conference events of the second annual conference of West African Countries Research and Education Network (WACREN) which held on 17-18 March 2016 under the theme: “Enabling Virtual Research and Education Communities.”
The Open Science in Africa workshop sought to find ways of improving the visibility of scientific output from Africa through the adoption of Open Scientific Approaches as well as defining advanced ICT services that African Scientific Communities of Practice need for their work.
The workshop presented participants with the opportunity to hear the opinions of leading African Scientists on Open Science and to see recent advances in Open Science services that have been developed for African Scientific Communities of Practice.
Participants had the chance to see how e-Infrastructures – such as computing, data and networking infrastructures – as well Science Gateways, Identity Federations, Open Access Data and Document Repositories can be integrated into easy-to-use platforms to support Open Science.
To achieve this, the joint workshop featured presentations on Open Science from MAGIC, TANDEM, Sci-GaIA, Open Research and Contributor ID (ORCID) and the Technical and Human Infrastructure for Open Research.
The second joint Sci-GaIA-TANDEM-MAGIC workshop was organised with the support of the European Commission (EC, DG CONNECT) in conjunction with the WACREN 2016 Conference.
