Background

UbuntuNet Alliance is the regional research and education networking organization for Eastern and Southern Africa. It builds and operates UbuntuNet, the regional high- speed Internet backbone network for Eastern and Southern Africa.  UbuntuNet Alliance is registered in Malawi as a not-for-profit association of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Africa to provide a secure data communications network that supports the region’s research, teaching, and learning.   Membership of the Alliance includes NRENs of the following countries: Botswana, Burundi, DRC, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia,
South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.  The member NRENs work together to promote networking for research and innovation and welcome not-for-profit transnational research and education organizations. UbuntuNet Alliance has its headquarters in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Job Title: Content Management Officer
Department: Content Management
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi Office

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Content Management Officer shall assist with all aspects of the Content Management Section. We seek a highly motivated and experienced Content Management Officer to join our team at UbuntuNet Alliance. In this role, the Content Management Officer will be responsible for developing and executing content strategies that support the Alliance’s objectives of enriching education and increasing the global discoverability of African research. The candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring that the Alliance’s digital repositories remain up-to-date and increase their visibility and user engagement. The Content Management Officer will also play a crucial role in supporting the development, implementation, and expansion of UbuntuNet Alliance’s educational resources, specifically the e-textbook program.

Key Responsibilities:

Project oversight: Provide strategic leadership for content management projects, developing and executing strategies that align with the Alliance’s mission to enhance the visibility of African research
E-Textbook program development: Lead the development and implementation of UbuntuNet Alliance’s e-textbook program.
Curate and manage research opportunities content: Oversee the curation of a comprehensive repository that houses research opportunities, educational resources, and collaborative initiatives relevant to the African research and education network.
Manage and archive research output content: Oversee the collection, storage, and preservation of preprints, datasets, presentations, and other research outputs in UbuntuNet Alliance’s digital repository.
Quality and consistency assurance: Ensure that all content meets high-quality standards and is consistent with UbuntuNet Alliance’s guidelines and scholarly principles.
Metadata-tagging implementation: Implement effective strategies to improve content organization, discoverability, and interoperability across scholarly digital services.
Community engagement: Engage with the research community to promote the submission of research items and to support the adoption of digital tools and persistent identifiers.
Workflow documentation: Ability to create clear, detailed, and accessible documentation of workflows and processes.

Experience:

– Proven experience in content management, particularly in academic or research-focused settings.
– Proficiency in Microsoft Office and website content management systems such as WordPress
– Strong technical skills, including experience with digital repository software such as DSpace
– Understanding of open-access principles and scholarly communication.
– Knowledge of interactive ebook software and digital publishing platforms.
– Knowledge of SEO, web traffic metrics, and social media platforms.
– Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders.
– Detail-oriented and organized thinker with strong organizational, coordination, and project management skills

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, Social Science, Communication Studies, or a related field.

Appointment and Remuneration:
