On 9th May 2025, the UbuntuNet Alliance successfully held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lusaka, Zambia, hosted by the Zambia Research and Education Network (ZAMREN). This year’s AGM was especially significant as it marked a transition in leadership within the Alliance’s Board of Directors and was held at the newly commissioned ZAMREN House , a proud symbol of progress for Zambia’s research and education community.
The UbuntuNet Alliance AGM is the highest governing body meeting of the Alliance, bringing together CEOs and representatives of its member National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). The AGM serves as a critical forum for reviewing the Alliance’s progress, making key policy and governance decisions, and electing members of the Board of Directors. This gathering not only strengthens the collective vision of the Alliance but also ensures continued accountability and transparency in its operations.

This year’s AGM was hosted at ZAMREN House, the new headquarters of ZAMREN located in the heart of Lusaka. Commissioned in a colorful ceremony in May 2024, ZAMREN House stands as a testament to the network’s continued growth and commitment to advancing research and education in Zambia and beyond. With state-of-the-art facilities and a modern aesthetic, the building reflects ZAMREN’s readiness to serve the academic and research community at an even higher level.

Speaking on the significance of hosting the AGM, ZAMREN CEO Mr. Stein Mkandawire shared:
“We are honored to host this year’s UbuntuNet Alliance AGM at ZAMREN House. It is a proud moment for us, not just as hosts, but as contributors to a shared vision of a digitally empowered research and education ecosystem in Africa. ZAMREN House represents what we can achieve together — resilience, innovation, and progress.”
A key highlight of the AGM was the farewell to outgoing Board Members who concluded their three-year term. The Alliance expresses heartfelt gratitude for their outstanding service, guidance, and commitment to the growth of research and education networking across the region. Their leadership has played a pivotal role in steering the Alliance through strategic initiatives and partnerships that continue to shape its future.
The meeting also witnessed the welcoming of new Board Members who now take up the mantle of governance and oversight. The UbuntuNet Alliance extends a warm welcome to the new Board, confident in their ability to build on past successes and guide the Alliance toward even greater impact.
